According to company chief Peter Chou and the Taiwan area Commercial Times HTC is looking to become one of the top five phone manufacturers in the world.
While Chou did not say how and when HTC is expected to reach this goal, it looks like it might be a while as HTC is only expected to ship 15 million handsets this year while Motorola (currently in 3rd place) predicts shipments of 100 million, and Sony Ericsson (currently in 5th place) estimates shipment of 90-100 million units as well. And, of course, Apple is its immediate challenger after selling one million iPhone 3G’s in the devices first sale weekend and an estimated three million in one month compared to the projected three million HTC Touch Diamond sales for this year.
HTC, you’d better step up your game with such high hopes!

Not an unreasonable goal, considering how many carrier-branded devices HTC makes. It also is relevant that Motorola is jockying for position with Sprint in the running for the worst-managed cellular technology company. The smartphone market is alive and well, despite the trailer-park-wisdom that tells the horrors of “this economy”.
